Amy's Ashes
Untitled EP

2009

Amy's Ashes is a relatively new band hailing from Sweden with their self-released EP. The band is in the process of recording their debut album, and in my opinion everyone should check out their EP for a preview. You definitely won't be disappointed and you are hooked before you even have the chance to notice it. Amy's Ashes is a delightful new breeze in the Swedish music scene and it certainly doesn't fail to convince that it's a noteworthy new orchestra.

This EP offers an intriguing mix of slightly melancholic electro/glam rock that combines together beautifully haunting vocals with gothic tendencies. To make the mix even more interesting, Amy's Ashes has mastered the simple art of doing songs that doesn't meander chaotically, the songs proceed steadily without losing the fresh rock'n'roll sound in any point.
Only unfortunate thing in this EP is that there aren't more songs in it, these three songs absolutely aren't enough to satisfy listener's appetite for some more of Amy's Ashes.

"Everlasting" is definitely the most energetic song in the EP. The song starts with a hypnotic mixture of light melodies until the song kicks off and absorbs the listener into a catchy, bit different typed of rock'n'roll song. Like mentioned earlier, every song proceeds steadily and when the second chorus hit's off, you can notice yourself singing along automatically. When the song is over, you obliviously hit the replay button.

"Restless" offers a nice contrast between the first and last song. It's beautiful in its simplicity, choruses are brilliantly placed and they hit the bull’s-eye everytime by creating a clear bridge that combines everything together.

"Carry on" is an interesting song, it's kind of a mixture of two earlier songs but still it's an independent piece with catchy riffs.

Amy's Ashes has created a passionate EP with a rich sounding world and appealing little piano melodies. If the band manages to continue doing as great song as these three, this band unquestionably has the chance to go high and far.

Babyland
Cavecraft

Metropolis Records
2008

This is a phenomenal band with the most unique set up and performances that I have seen.

I saw them first performing live when I came down to L.A. to see Big Boy, and now I have the privilege to review the sixth full-length album, Cavecraft, by Babyland. I had the original intention of going song by song, but as I was listening, I realized that it would be incredibly hard to do. The more I listened through the album, the more I realized how connected the songs are. What I mean, is that they mix perfectly together and even though each one is of course an individual song with an individual character, they are a group and should be treated as such. The one constant feeling I got from each song, whether mellow or not, was one of movement. I just wanted to move to the songs, sometimes more slowly and sometimes more chaotically but I found that to be a unique feature.

A lot of bands create music where movement is expected and yes you do feel the music and move, but there is something more haunting about this record so the movement becomes deeper; almost a part of you as you listen to each song. I would highly recommend this album, as well as seeing them live if you can. No record can give you what they will during a live performance. If you are unfamiliar with them then I would recommend checking out “Last Ave.”, “You Will Never Have It”, “Low Relics”, “The End of All Summers” and “Search and Rescue” from this album.

Dope Stars Inc.
Criminal Minds // Morning Star

Metropolis Records
2008

When Dope Stars Inc. made their debut in 2003, the world wasn’t ready to accept them, their cyberpunk or their theories in the downfall of society. Nor were they ready for Victor Love’s visionary ideals and concepts. Fast forward six years later to 2009 where the world is in disarray with failing economies, spiraling societies and governments and the world of Dope Stars Inc. seems so much more plausible. Just read the lyrics to see what I mean.

Criminal Intents // Morning Star is their latest full length EP consisting of 4 original songs, 9 remixes by various artists, a cover song and an old demo from years past. The 4 original songs provide a unique blend between the “old” Dope Stars Inc that fans are highly familiar with tracks “Criminal Intents” and “Morning Star” sounding reminiscent of Neuromance, and “Nothing Is Left” familiarizing with Gigahearts. However, “Digital Warriors” starts to bridge the gap between the old and the new. As with each album the band has released to date, Dope Stars Inc., has shown a different musical side every time. Unlike most bands, which have a set style each time, these guys certainly keep us guessing as what to expect with each release. “Digital Warriors”, in my opinion, is the example of this on the EP; and is also most stand out track on it, providing musically, a harsh reality of things to come. The 9 remixes are also an exceptional addition to this EP, with artist contributions by: KMFDM, Gothminster, Mortiis, Lovecrave, Deflore, Spiritual Front, Reverend Hellbastard, Crossbreed and Violent Diva.

Bonus: The cover version of Clan of Xymox’s “Jasmine and Rose” is amazing. This track alone, along with the original songs on this EP is worth the purchase. The demo version of “Vyperpunk” which made its produced version on Neuromance is an endearing addition as well for the older fans that have been around since the dawn of Dope Stars Inc.

Change is near. Change is inevitable. Dope Stars Inc. will be on the forefront of change in this new world order. Are you ready for a revolution?

Dying Diva
Sunday Walk on Murder Avenue
Unsigned
2009

Composed of Val Monteleone, Enrico Caputo, Pretti, Closer, and Andrew Spring; Dying Diva is the latest band emerging from the ever growing scene in Italy.  Their debut album, A Sunday Walk on Murder Avenue, is an all-out auditory assault on your ears blending elements of metal, rock, pop and electronica.  Those familiar with Avenged Sevenfold and AFI will be happy to take notice of this band, and fans (and children) of the 80’s will also appreciate this album for what it is.

“My Love For You Is Bombproof”, the second track off the album immediately following their intro track, is riddled with catchy, pop induced beats that fall somewhere between AFI and Bon Jovi.  Within a couple of seconds into this track, you’ll find yourself rocking around the place having more fun than you could imagine.  By the time this track ends, you’re hungry for more - and believe me, this album will not let you down! Every track is different than the next, continually mixing things up, never giving you a sense of when this rollercoaster ride will end.  Normally I would give an in-depth review or go track by track, however, A Sunday Walk on Murder Avenue is the type of album that one needs to experience on your own.

Dying Diva is certainly a band to keep an eye on, and they will be commanding your attention before you know it!!  They’re here to make music, to have fun and to enjoy every minute of fame that comes their way.  I wish them the absolute best!  A Sunday Walk on Murder Avenue has officially (and permanently) made its way into my top 10 album playlist.
